The World Outreach Network of Hamilton Conference began a project to remove some of the world's land mines. Working through The Canadian Association for Mine and Explosive Ordnance Security (CAMEO) they selected the southern-most part of Sudan as their area of concentration. The initial goal of the project is to raise $120,000 to initiate the demining work in Southern Sudan, which was then extended to December 31, 2001. They were able to raise $140,000 to start this project (click here for Hamilton Conference donor information).
CAMEO Sudan Project information
The main goals of this project were:
- Training southern Sudanese villagers:
- How to live in a mined environment
- How to evacuate and treat casualties so they can arrive alive at larger medical facilities
- How to recognize and safely dispose of land mines and unexploded bombs
- Create and sustain a mine awareness and victim assistance capacity in communities in high mine hazard areas.
- To clear mines and unexploded ordnance from these communities and neighboring farm land.
The Episcopal Church, USA continued the Sudan Project by contributing $50,000 USD in 2001 and again in 2002..
The Donner Canadian Foundation contributed $40,000 CAD in 2001 for general support.
