ABOUT US

OSIL has approximately 10 years expertise in carrying out the following technical and social services:

  • Mine Risk Education (MRE), which seeks to reduce mine injuries and fatalities by raising awareness and promoting behavioral change. Our MRE projects comprise public information dissemination, tutoring of Mine Risk Trainers, empowering communities via their participation and establishment of Humanitarian Mine Action Committees.
  • Landmine & Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) Clearance and Stockpile Destruction. This involves the detection and destruction of hidden mines and stockpile in south Sudan.
Victim Assistance forms an intrinsic part of our landmine clearance projects and includes the re-integration of landmine victims and demobilized groups such as soldiers.

Achievements

§   2003 Cross Conflict Project

Working in partnership with JASMAR, a northern Sudan NGO mandated by the Government of Sudan, OSIL was instrumental in the successful training of both southern and northern deminers in Nuba Mountains.

§   The Deed of Commitment

In 2001, OSIL played a key role in creating “The Deed of Commitment” (Geneva Call) which was signed by the SPLM on 4th October 2001. This incorporated the total ban on use of antipersonnel landmines by non-state actors. A parallel agreement for state actors – the Ottawa Agreement – which had been signed earlier by the Government of Sudan in 1998, was later ratified in 2004.

§   Excellence in Mine Action

In 2004, OSIL received an award for excellence in its operations from the Foundation for Excellence in Business Practice, Geneva Switzerland.
