MAUS
Antipersonnel Mine

Description
The MAUS is a flat cylinder mine that comprises two threaded steel retaining
rings holding a neoprene pressure dome and plastic base against a threaded plastic
mine body. The mine is sealed with three large 'o' rings. The MAUS has only
one opening in its base, for a detonator well, hereas the MAUS/1 has an additional
plug that either provides access to the expansion bulb or possibly acts as a
vent from the diaphragm. The mine uses a pressure pneumatic fuze, which prevents
the armed mine from exploding on ground impact without a fuze arming delay.
This resistance to explosion caused by the rapid pressure pulse on impact also
provides resistance to initiation from overpressure blast or flail countermeasures.
The Italian Mina antiuomo Seminabile, MAUS, is the initial production version
of the MAUS/1, which is currently used by the Italian Army. This scatterable
antipersonnel blast mine was designed to be hand emplaced or scattered from
up to 100 meters altitude at 100-m/s velocity. The MAUS, which is now obsolete,
entered production in 1965 as an adaptation of an ealier prototype version with
an all plastic body.
